The atomisation lesson of Frank Fischer

For my first solo exhibition, since moving from London to The Hague, I wanted to find a theme and subject that has a strong connection to my new home. So, once the lockdown had ended, I obtained a “Museumkaart” and began exploring local museums for inspiration. I grew particularly fond of the Mauritshuis for its world-class Flemish art collection, the historic architecture and lovely setting in the centre of The Hague. I noticed that I kept visiting this place.

This year, Mauritshuis celebrates its second centurial and therefore I have decided to dedicate my upcoming solo show in Project 2.0 / Gallery to its collection. I based all my paintings for this exhibition on their displayed artworks. I often travelled between there and my studio so I could see the original artworks as I worked on my interpretations of them. The title of the solo refers to the artwork The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp by Rembrandt van Rijn from 1632. As depicted in this painting, I dissect existing paintings into my abstract version.
