We are pleased as punch to kick off Sweet Summer Weeks, our group shows for the summer period! For the first phase we are proud to present a vibrant and playful pairing of works by Sanja Marušić, Frank Fischer and Laurien Renckens.
Colour and expression collide in their work in harmonious yet unique ways, with Fischer’s drip-painted abstractions of influential artworks, Marušić’s singular approach to escapism and personal documentation through a mix of painting and photography, and Renckens’ brightly coloured and delicate line work in celebration of idiosyncrasies in humanity.
Come by for the first taste of Sweet Summer Weeks!
Frank Fischer
Frank Fischer is an artist who was born in Zurich, Switzerland, and now lives and works in The Hague, Holland. Fischer makes ultra-glossy linear artworks on an aluminium surface. The artworks are inspired by real masterpieces by world famous artists.
He uses the image of such a masterpiece to edit it on the computer and to stretch the image. What remains of the image is a kind of bar code where only the colour of the existing artwork can be recognised. Frank Fischer uses this barcode to create his own artwork by dripping down glossy paint, drop by drop, colour after colour.
This process is incredibly precise and time consuming, especially since the end of the top and bottom need much time to dry. When they are dried the ends look like stalactites of colour.
Sanja Marušić (1991) is a Dutch-Croatian artist based in Amsterdam. She studied photography at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (KABK), and in 2013 she graduated with an Honorable Mention.
Marušić travels the world to create otherworldly images. Her practice emanates from photography and diverts to painting and collage techniques, resulting in mixed media art. Through photography she captures miniature performances in which a human figure (usually Marušić herself in self-made costumes), sometimes accompanied by another, uncannily moving through a surreal landscape. The stories she creates often find their genesis in her personal life. She manipulates her images so the landscape and the moment itself becomes more abstract, creating a surreal new world, using it as a kind of escapism for herself and the viewer.
Laurien Renckens
For Laurien Renckens, the last few years have been a journey. Her previous series, Telesma, captured her experience in making good luck talismans from recyclable material, inspired by her travels through Kenya. From the bold and bright colours, to the indomitable spirit of the Kenyan people, Laurien created a series of 99 unique small works on reused Nespresso cardboard packaging, painted and folded out to make colourful talismans.
For her latest series, Bird of Paradise, Laurien is returning to painting on canvas, but bringing to the canvas much of what she learned from her experiences in Kenya and with her Telesma series. Laurien naturally started developing more figures, but realised that these new creations deserve to be big. By first creating them out of paper and then rendering them on canvas layer by layer, Laurien has found a way to bring what she has learned over the last few years back to her original love, painting. Every line marks a gesture of renewal, while remaining rooted in what already is. Together they form rhythms and patterns that seem to move, to vibrate.
