/ Maayke Schuitema / Who wants to live forever

31 Oct 2021 / 12 Dec 2021

Maayke Schuitema is a Dutch artist who has studied classical ballet at the Royal Conservatory and fine arts at the Royal Academy in The Hague.

Though Maayke is a talented illustrator and painter she is mostly known for her large scale linocut prints on paper and canvas. In 2014 she even made the largest linocut print in the world made by one artist called ‘The Tenth Muse’.

With her life-size prints of female nudes, representing the aspect of her involvement in the women's movement, Maayke often relates to the black-and-white photography and affiche art. Her present work is more direct and topical than ever; it propagates, communicates and encourages reflection.

Her definite black graphic lines enter, BAM, directly and often reflect the delicate balance between private and public.

Parallel to her nudes she has a lifelong love for portrait art. She collects, makes and reads them. For Maayke the ideal way to react directly to major events in the world and to her own life. "By making a portrait regularly I can mirror my life, I process and interpret personal relationships and I'm keeping a sharp eye.”

She made over 100 portraits in her life, free work as well as commissioned. For the first time Project 2.0 / Gallery shows an overview with only her portraits, in the exhibition titled 'Who wants to live forever'.

Visit her beautiful Solo from Sunday October 31 to December 12 in Project 2.0/Gallery!
